Awareness Course

Manual handling in Construction

Hazard Awareness Course for Operatives

IMPORTANT

*HSE Guidance is that training should be provided on the actual items workers are required to pick up on site.

Who is it for?

The following roles will benefit from this training:
  • Site Managers
  • Site workers
  • Health and Safety Managers

What is it?

This course is designed to help construction workers understand manual handling risks and how to prevent injuries such as back, shoulder, and joint strains. It explains what manual handling is, why injuries are common in construction, and the legal duties placed on employers and workers.

Learners are guided through how to identify risk using the TILE-O approach (Task, Individual, Load, Environment, Other factors) and the Avoid–Assess–Reduce method. The course outlines manual handling risk assessments, safe lifting and carrying techniques, team handling, use of mechanical aids, and the effect of fatigue, rushing, and work pressures on injury risk.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to recognise hazardous manual handling tasks, apply practical controls, and know when to stop work and reassess to keep themselves and others safe.

Why is it offered?

Manual handling injuries remain one of the most common causes of lost time, pain, and long-term ill health in the construction industry. Tasks such as lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and handling materials can place significant strain on the body, particularly when work is rushed, poorly planned, or carried out in challenging environments. This course is offered to help workers recognise these risks early and understand how everyday decisions can reduce the likelihood of injury.

The course also supports legal compliance by helping employers and workers meet their duties under UK health and safety law. By improving awareness of risk assessment, safe systems of work, and practical control measures, the training helps create safer working practices, reduces accidents and ill-health, and encourages workers to stop and reassess when tasks cannot be carried out safely.

How long does it take?

About 1 hour 15minutes.

How often is it recommended?

Every three years.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes
